exhibition design

production

Originally an airplane parts manufacturing warehouse, the unique 7,500 SF Causecast headquarters space in Santa Monica was selected to host n1 LA. While the aesthetic and location fit perfectly with SPILT, it did not come without a challenge. The parameters were the following: no existing wall or structure was allowed to be touched or modified (including hanging artwork), there was no existing lighting, and due to the functioning office, SPILT was given a strict in-and-out time frame of 40 hours, beginning at 9 PM Friday evening, 21 hours before the Saturday event began.

In order to meet these parameters, while creating a unique event aesthetic and custom exhibition galleries specific to each artist, the decision was made early on to design and construct the entire architecture for the exhibition in this time frame. Focusing on a layout that could be built quickly and efficiently, the SPILT  rchitecture was designed around simple modular framing systems and easily sourced materials. SPILT procured 100% of the build-out materials through generous donations. Allison Geddie and LMU donated 25 stage flats, and The ReUse People and The Reclaimer donated all of the framing materials consisting of reclaimed plywood and 2x4 studs from two recently deconstructed houses in Los Angeles.

Beginning at 9 PM Friday evening, the SPILT construction team was given access to start breaking down and rearranging the office space in order to begin event construction. With the goal of having the space prepared for the artists to begin mounting their work by 9 AM on Saturday, the team worked through the night framing the spaces out, painting specific sections, and wiring electrical for the exhibition lighting. By 4 PM on Sunday following the event, the SPILT construction team deconstructed the space, shipped out all of the material, and set back up the Causecast office for normal operation. All of the reclaimed material has been stored and will be used for future exhibition design.
